The little ones' room can be their castle
Decorators consider kids with fine taste
By
Joyce Cohen Special for USA TODAY
Even for the child who has everything - say,
a big bedroom, a private bathroom, maybe even
an entire playroom - well, there's plenty more
to get for the little tyke.
When it comes to children's rooms, there's no
shortage of super-duper furnishings on the market.
"Kids have more sophisticated tastes now
and are more demanding about what they want,"
says Jane Kitchen, editor of Kids Today, a trade
magazine for children's home furnishings, And
older, wealthier parents, not to mention indulgent
grandparents, "want to give the kids the
very best of everything - education, clothes,
furniture." Indeed, handpainted furniture,
now a big trend, "You get a million choices
,in what you
want painted on, what colors you want, accessories
to go along," Kitchen says.
Parents with elaborate taste often choose frilly,
flowery beds for girls, and boat or car themes
for boys, says Andrea Edmunds of Posh Tots,
an upscale online retailer launched three years
ago when the founders couldn't find unique furniture
for their young daughters, their customers "want
furniture that is an extension of their home,"
says Edmunds, "Their attitude is that the
kids are only young once, which is different
from the mass- market approach that (assumes)
they will outgrow things."
Outdoor playhouses are more common than indoor
ones, which require a room with sufficient space.
Brothers Kevin and Michael Herd of Tanglewood
Design deal with the space issue by including
a loft or bunk in their indoor playhouses, One
reason parents love opulent beds: "To bribe
the kids to sleep in their own bed instead of
coming into bed with the parents," says
Kevin Herd, "People tell us it works like
a charm," Also:
"When it's bedtime, they don't fight you."
On this page and opposite is a quick sampling
of upscale items available to adorn the rooms
of today's pampered progeny.

Wall mural
The
large wall murals by Danise Rosak of Danay Design
(danaydesign.com) include 3-D animals carved
of wood, She will do installations, but finds
people prefer to buy the design-covered wallpaper,
install it themselves, then screw in the animals.
A popular theme is fish - often a whole family,
with a lipsticked mother, a hatted father and
a school of little ones. "Kids can interact
with their mural," Rosak says, "They
touch it, they pet it, they kiss it." Prices
ranges from $600 to $9,000, depending on size
and detail.
Rosak, who also makes murals that decorate hospitals
and other children's institutions, makes skyboxes
and lightboxes, too, that function as murals
for bedroom ceilings.

Danay
Design is an in-house design and fabrication
company located in Moore Haven, Florida. Emerging
from a custom paint shop, the company specializes
in artwork for healthcare amenities.
Danise Rosak, Founder, and Owner, directs
her energies creating artwork that will contribute
to the healing environment in health care
facilities. She combines her love of nature
with a flair for the unusual; using her training
in art therapy, she creates elements for healing
design. Because the response was so dramatic
and positive, Danise has found her niche,
creating "Interactif Art." "Interactif
Art" transforms anxiety into calm in
the health care environment. Everyone has
experienced anxious feelings when entering
a hospital or doctors office, whether they
are the patient or are visiting someone. Imagine
the long, looming hallways, patient rooms
and waiting areas decorated with vibrant dimensional
murals that captivate your attention. Imagine
a scene that is alive with color, texture,
and atmosphere. Your mood is altered and your
fears diminished. Using its patented "Interactif
Art," Danay Designs brings the patient,
visitor and healthcare worker into full contact
with lush, vibrant surroundings.
Danay Design was commissioned to transform
the Neonatal Intensive Care Hallway at Broward
General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida with this healing concept in mind.
Danise designed and created a wildlife themed
environment in an existing pediatric waiting
room. She installed dimensional, realistic
animals on top of her murals. These handcrafted
animals are vibrantly painted.
In front of a painted waterfall, Danise incorporated
a chair into the scene giving you the feeling
of being part of the mural. While sitring
in the chair you have visions of water flowing
around you.
Cape Fear Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department
in North Carolina commissioned Danay Design
to complete a mural in their emergency waiting
room. A wildlife scene with hand painted dimensional
animals ornate the walls to give a relaxing,
calming effect to their patients and the families.
Not only are the walls pleasant to the eyes,
they are dimensional so children of all ages
can touch, pet and embrace the animals.
Forty-foot wildlife mural
Murals on ceiling tiles were a welcome addition
at Beebe Medical Center in Delaware. Other
useful items are skyboxes. These boxes are
artwork or photos illuminated in framed boxes
for walls or ceiling mounts. Matt Santangelo,
RN stated, "I especially think the skyboxes
are useful. They take the kids' minds off
of scary procedures, like inserting IV's."
In May of 2004, Danise completed wallpaper
behind textured glass with dimensional rainbow,
coral, and fish for the Edwards Hospital in
Naperville Illinois. The mural adorns the
pediatric emergency entranceway.
Danise Rosak uses her artistic abilities to
create a shift in your awareness, taking patients
from states of anxiety and fear to a state
of calm curiosity. Danise and her team are
dedicated to expressing themselves in artwork
that will help sick, hurting and anxious individuals
to find peace and tranquility in the moment.
